Still relevant indepth review

All topics are covered in this older less expensive review manual. I would recommend though that your areas of concentration be thermodynamics (heat transfer too), fluid mechanics, compressible fluid dynamics, and mechanics of materials (strength of materials and elasticity)in this order as the majority of questions involve these topics and they also tend to be the thorniest. You should in particular for example know which entropy relations to employ-if the process is adiabatic (no heat interaction or insulated) and occurs nearly at constant temperature (isothermal)-use isentropic relations. As you do the problems or read his solutions be aware of this and outline strategies or flowcharts noting conditions and relations then employed. You'll probably need your textbooks here-these charts or notes will help. Be adept at the use of charts-like Keenan and Keyes. Also be aware that the current test is multiple choice-80 questions, 40 in the morning and 40 in the afternoon- where this book was written when the more subjective 8 problems completely and correctly solved was given. Subjectivity is gone but in multiple choice some logic may help eliminate wrong answers-so it's not a bad thing, probably upped the education requirements though-on this point shop around if you can. Get a hold of a current practice exam booklet too.

This is the classic reference for anyone studying for the PE exam in mechanical engineering. This is an older edition, but when compared to newer editions which were much more expensive, it provides the same quality of information and was a great preparation tool to help pass the PE exam on the first try without a review course!

Greatest Review of most subjects learned as a MechE in college!

This is a handy tool every Mechanical Engineer should have on the bookshelf. A quick reference guide that provides most formulas and info on a variety of ME subjects. This is a book I will use for the rest of my career for quick reference needs. This book and it's companion the Solutions Manual include more information in a better formatted manner than the current book recommended by the PE Exam board. I am excited that a friend had this book and I was able to find one and pick it up for my library.

Using powerful communications satellites in the 1980s and, later, unbridled capital, transnational corporations such as McDonald's and Nike and their media-mogul counterparts have infiltrated cultures from Paris to Beijing, understanding perfectly that what the world sees the world buys (in this case, Big Macs and anything plastered with a Nike swoosh). Of course, it helps when hoops legend Michael Jordan--the world's most idolized athlete--is pitching your products. His influence is pervasive: "McDonald's, blaring Michael Jordan's endorsement, operated in 103 nations and fed one percent of the world's population each day. 'Within the East Asian urban environment,' one historian of the firm notes, 'McDonald's fills a niche once occupied by the teahouse, the neighborhood shop, the street-side stall, and the park bench.'"

LaFeber transitions smoothly from Michael Jordan biography to socioeconomic commentary, first exploring Jordan as the great American hero, then turning a critical eye on Nike and its shoddy overseas labor practices. In assessing the recently retired star's ascent from basketball phenom to international marketing phenomenon, LaFeber (The Clash, etc.) views Jordan as the harbinger of a new kind of capitalism fueled by information-age media. It's a world in which American transnational companies like Nike have learned to establish brand consciousness with worldwide social and economic impact. Jordan's career corresponded with and was fueled by the emergence of CNN, the Internet and aggressive worldwide marketing. To put Jordan in context, LaFeber links the history of basketball with America's century of economic dominance and writes entertainingly about the development of the sport into a multi-billion-dollar business with licensing spinoffs. He also asks tough questions about Jordan's responsibility as a public figure ("politically neutered," in Arthur Ashe's phrase) and his muted, awkward reaction to Nike's much criticized labor practices in developing countries. Does not include Chapter 7 in Kindle Edition.

So this was assigned as one of the textbooks for my Sociology courses, and it turns out the Kindle version does not include the 2002 addition of Chapter 7 which discusses a post 9/11 world.
So I'm kinda screwed. This problem needs to be fixed.

Maybe a little "lterary license" but, by and large, true!

Having read some of the earlier reviews I thought that it might be enlightening to provide a little bit of background for "The Tracker" and its author, Tom Brown, Jr.
I have hunted and fished and loved the outdoors all of my life. When I first read "The Tracker" I was immediately fascinated with the thought that there still might be a master tracker and survivalist somewhere in the world and that if even 50% of "The Tracker" was true, I had to find this guy!!! First of all, though, I searched out and read everything I could by Tom Brown and began to realize just how little I knew about the "real" world. I finally contacted the publisher of "The Tracker" and was directed to a P.O. Box number in New Jersey. I wrote to Tom about the possibility of learning from him and was rewarded by being informed that he operated an outdoors school. I began to attend classes there and judged for myself if Tom was the person he claimed. My conclusion is-- that he can do everything he claims (and I have seen him do some stuff that just leaves you shaking your head). Countless newspaper stories in New Jersey and elsewhere documenting his ability to find lost people (some of whom didn't necessarily want to be found) attest to his tracking ability. His favorite phrase seems to be, "Prove me wrong!". He is confident of his ability and genuinely wants you to be able to do the same things he does. Don't let the fact that our lives are pretty much consumed by the day to day struggle to survive blind you to the fact that there is a fantastic world out there and try to remember that you once knew about it when you were young and your mind was open. "The Tracker" is a great read that you can take as fiction OR fact and enjoy equally!! Be careful, though, because it may have the same effect as the little pill in "The Matrix" and you may "wake up". In any case, it will at least remind you of how life used to be when you were young and everything was fascinating!!!

A Wonderful and Enjoyable Resource on Tracking, WIlderness Survival and More

Some reviewers have been critical or skeptical of this book and/or it's author. My latest purchase of this book was as a gift, for a young relative who's going thru training for position as a Game Warden. My own copy was purchased many years ago, after learning of it thru other boys in my sons' Boy Scout troop at the time. There were no reviews by others that biased my view or appreciation of it at that time.

I read the book thru cover-to-cover, and learned many things - about 'how to track', basic wilderness survival considerations and methods ...and about life from 'different perspectives.' Whatever criticisms some reviewers recorded in Amazon many years later, I didn't experience or consider them worth remembering. Some of the 'promotional wording' on the cover really doesn't relate to what I got out of the book. This is just too good - as instruction, as appreciation, and even just basic enjoyment.

One of the most significant 'lessons' was what he described as Stalking Wolf's (Grandfather's) primary (or only?) teaching method. Unlike many "how to" books (like the typical Boy Scout Manual of the time), Grandfather never 'told them' to "do this or do that" in response to some situation. What he did (entirely, it seems, from my memory of reading it long ago) was to ask questions ...which provoked the boys to use their powers of observation and thinking processes to learn for themselves about the situations he placed them in, or pointed them toward.

If someone is interested in learning about basics of tracking and/or wilderness survival, I don't think this is a resource they should overlook ...unless they're already very advanced from other 'hands on' training (maybe Special Forces or Ranger training? I never experienced those myself, so can't compare it).

I found this at the library 20 years ago and read it to our 2 young daughters. We did a chapter a day and found it the greatest adventure book ever. After reading this book, I went on to read all of the books Tom Brown wrote concerning his further adventures and instruction from Grandfather in the natural and spiritual order.

Dr. Gould is the author of numerous papers and several books and is the founding editor of the prestigious journal, Engineering Structures. He has served as a consultant to industry and to governmental organizations and has received numerous awards for his research, professional and educational activities.
