About the Author

Jerry Kaplan is a serial entrepreneur, Artificial Intelligence expert, technical innovator, bestselling author, and futurist, and is best known for his key role in defining the tablet computer industry as founder of GO Corporation in 1987. He is the author of Humans Need Not Apply: A Guide to Wealth and Work in the Age of Artificial Intelligence and Startup: A Silicon Valley Adventure.

Kaplan holds a BA in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Chicago (1972), and a PhD in Computer and Information Science (specializing in Artificial Intelligence) from the University of Pennsylvania (1979). He is currently a visiting lecturer at Stanford University, teaching a course entitled "History, Philosophy, Ethics, and Social Impact of Artificial Intelligence" in the Computer Science Department, and is a Fellow at The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics, of the Stanford Law School.

Artificial Intelligence probably isn't Skynet, but it probably will affect your life

This is a useful overview of the current state of artificial intelligence. The author has clearly been swimming in these waters during his academic studies and professional career. I came away with the sense that his thoughts and observations were based on close personal experience and careful analysis. If the area interests you, I think that you'll find that Dr. Kaplan is an experienced guide.

What are some of the major areas that the book examines? He examines the definition of artificial intelligence, considers its intellectual history and explores the frontiers of robotics, computer vision and speech recognition. As he looks at the philosophy of AI, he explains his position on whether computers can think, have free will, possess consciousness, and have feelings. He doesn't think they do and deems it unlikely that they will.

The author also examines the effect of AI on law, human labor (basically jobs) and social equity. These issues currently affect much of our political discourse. Since I think that much of our society fails to appreciate the economic and social effects of technology, the book addresses matters that, in my opinion, need more of society's attention. The book looks at the possible future impact of AI. The author believes that the future impact of AI will likely mirror that of other technological advances; in other words, that with time AI will be viewed as simply another tool to be employed for good or ill.

You should be aware that the book takes time examining philosophical issues such as can intelligence be defined or accurately measured (probably not in the author's view), what are free will and consciousness (difficult to define in humans and probably impossible to define in machines) and feelings (whether computers will ever have feelings is mostly a matter of a human's personal choice). Will artificially intelligent machines ever rule over us (probably not, but no one's 100% sure)? This reminded me of another book published by Oxford on Complexity which described emergent conditions such as one or a number of water molecules do not possess the condition that we call "wetness," but a lot of water molecules in one place are commonly described as "wet". Maybe if we get enough of these machines connected and operated under a range of algorithms, then humans may discover that, as a large number of water molecules are "wet," a large interconnection of computers suitably programmed may start to look "intelligent," whatever we may mean by that.

Dr. Kaplan provides a broad and useful overview of artificial intelligence. If the topic interests you, I recommend it.

About the Author

Frederik Coene is currently Attach� dealing with post-conflict assistance in the Delegation of the European Commission to Georgia. His research on the Caucasus began in 1999 during his internship in the Office of the Secretary-General at NATO Headquarters. Since then he has researched, worked and travelled in all parts of the Caucasus.

Well researched but not as well written

Looking for an introductory text to the region in preparation for a trip to Georgia, I found a copy of F. Coene’s _The Caucasus_, which left me despairing I’d learn much. That’s not because Coene hasn’t done his research. The book is stuffed with data. Unfortunately, it reads more like an encyclopedia and is best used as a reference and research tool. Charles King’s _The Ghost of Freedom_, on the other hand, is quite the opposite, a well-written, compelling narrative that though limited historically to the last two hundred years, offers a portrait of a region where independence is always just out of reach. King is in fact such a solid writer I’m seeking out his histories of the Black Sea, Odessa, and the new Turkish Republic. In the meantime, I wonder if anyone has anything more to recommend on the Caucasus.

Prime reading on the Caucasus

Coene's book is easily one of the best books I've come across regarding the Caucasus. As the previous reviewer cited the work covers both the north and south Caucasus with great information across a variety of issues...ranging from conflict, economics, demographics, historical and cultural topics. This is an indepensible read, although I found the price slightly high it was very worth the purchase.

WOW ! A self-help book that actually HELPS!!

This book is worth its weight in gold. No hocus-pocus quick fixes here - just common sense in short chapters on a myriad of methods human beings use to screw life up for themselves - or should I say "ourselves"? I saw myself on many pages, to one degree or another, and the "Usable Insights" were actually useful!! Very few authors go as far at stripping away the delusions people hide behind as Dr. Goulston. For anyone who REALLY wants to get to the nitty-gritty about how self-sabotage is hurting him/her, this book is a true gift!

I'm not a book reader but this is a great book. I had a bad friendship and I needed to understand why it was going so wrong after 10 yrs. i was able to understand more about myself and others. What to look for and not in a friend.

An Older Couple Get a Second Chance When They Are Brought Together By Circumstances

I saw the blurb on this one and just could not resist. On occasion, I love quirky over the top story lines and this one decidedly fit the bill though later I'll mention how I kind of mistook the tone of the story.

The story is about two generations of a father and his son and a mother and her daughter having events repeat themselves. Jake and Maggie had a youthful fling with consequences that, due to outside interference and their own youth, caused the paths of their lives to go down a much different road than they set out on. Nineteen years later, they discover that his son and her daughter are getting set to face a similar situation.

Jake is a former Pro football star who has been teaching and coaching at a high school in Pennsylvania. He has reared his son alone since he and his wife were divorced. On the outside he seems to have it altogether, but on the inside he is still confused and hurting from a short period of his life that occurred almost 20 years before when he fell for a young innocent girl who refused to marry him after he got her pregnant. Now that young girl is a woman who is the mother of the girl his son got pregnant and she wants nothing to do with him. Jake realizes that though he is bitter about the choice she made in the past, he has never stopped having feelings for her.

After almost 3 years of widowhood, Margie wants to get back into the game of life so takes a job as a reading specialist teacher that her cousin found for her. It is not long before she discovers that the guy who got her pregnant and then not long after married another woman not only lives in the same town, but teaches in the same school district. She is able to avoid him until a bizarre coincidence forces them together. Her daughter, Emma, falls for his son and they're expecting a child. Now Maggie is forced to work with Jake for the benefit of their children. Her emotions are so upended because even though she is still hurt that he didn't love her and married another gal, she still is attracted to him.

Alex and Emma have their own teen issues going on that force them to grow up fast. He is a star football prospect, but worries about living up to the expectation of being Rocket Mannion's son. He also must fend off a jealous guy and a girl who threatens to ruin what he has with Emma all while adjusting to a youthful marriage and fatherhood. Emma feels physically inadequate and cannot understand what Alex sees in her and will he still want her when she is big with child so she feels insecure and jealous.

So there was a lot going on in this story to say the least. When I read the blurb, I thought it would be a light read, but it wasn't because of the sad circumstances that drove Jake and Margie apart in the first place and were still affecting them and the realistic issues that Alex and Emma were facing too. I didn't mind having to change my perception of the book's tone and enjoyed what came.

The story is mainly about Jake and Margie, but a great deal of it also shifted to Alex and Emma which was fine because their stories are tied together as Jake, who is working on his doctoral thesis in teen psychology pointed out. Fortunately for Alex and Emma, they have two understanding and financially stable parents who can support them- while still making them do us much for themselves as they can to teach responsibility- so that they could still fulfill their dreams if they wished unlike what happened with Jake and Margie who just had to pick up the pieces with no understanding parents and go on in their separate lives.

As a reader, I worked out early on what had really happened in the past because I had the benefit of everyone's perception and thoughts. This had the advantage of making me very sympathetic to the sufferings of Jake and Margie even while I impatiently waited for the moment when all the secrets would be revealed. There were a few secrets that came as a complete surprise too. I was so ready for the big moment of revelation. I felt my own anger at the culprits and I was grateful that the author had already built in consequences for them (guess I've got some vindictiveness in me to be satisfied by that).

I really liked all four of the major characters and enjoyed watching them grow and triumph. I have a great appreciation for the author's talent in switching voices so well. Not everyone can pull off a middle aged man's point of view and turn around to do a young teen girl right behind it and then a middle aged woman and a teen aged boy. Amazing!

This book contains frank discussions about sex (Jake is a sex ed teacher and plans to counsel) and participation in that very activity. ;D It also hits on the touchy topic of abortion.

If you enjoy a story that is a little challenging on the emotions, slow developing with likeable characters while offering up some humor and 'ahhh' moments, give this one a try.

A little different than the traditional romance, Kellogg takes you on an emotional ride in her newest publication that deals with love, lust, emotionally devastating decisions and their ramifications. And yet, Kellogg proves once again that while life may never be what you envisioned, love makes it as near-to-perfect as you can get!

Great Resource material!

I am a physical therapist. I bought this book as a quick reference for when I write up plan of cares for patients. The format is nice--it includes a description of the condition, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, differential diagnoses, things to look for on an exam, appropriate tests, red flags, medical and rehab treatment/modalities, surgical interventions to consider and prognosis (this list is NOT all inclusive!) In a nutshell, it is a concise format with very useful information. I was pleased to see that the conditions are things I see a lot in the clinic. I started working in orthopedic rehab after a long break raising my kids, and needed some reference tools! I definitely found this book to be very helpful.

Easy reading, well-organized, with excellent graphics

By far, this is the best book I have read on the subject. I'll let you know what my final opinion is once I finish.

The graphics are excellent but suffer from being on poor paper. Aside from that negative, this is probably the best book in the area of SIS and LOPA available. I've read a few others and after a few chapters it is difficult to follow.

LOPA should precede a full-HAZOP because it is more conservative in its approach. With this in mind, the full-HAZOP should look at ways to trim the results of LOPA to find a well-explored optimal level of protection.

I will add to this review after I finish the book.

Good Overview

This is an excellent book that will give you the feel of LOPA and an understanding of its concepts. It does not get into the nit and gritty of how to calculate SIL, etc. However, with things like SIL SOLVER around, you really don't need that. By the way, COP pretty much bases their LOPA protocol on this book.

Concise, Interesting, Useful

An early and interesting book from the distinguished historian Peter Gay. This book is a concise discussion of the life and thought of Eduard Bernstein, the originator of Revisionist socialism. In addition to its nice coverage of Bernstein, this book is useful for understanding the history of the great German Social Democratic Party (SPD). The book is divided into 3 sections. Gay opens with a concise narrative of Bernstein's life up the development of Revisionism. Born into an assimilated Jewish family, Bernstein came from a modest background and became involved in the socialist movement at a young age. He became a prominent figure in one of the major German socialist groups, had to go into exile during Bismarck's persecution of the Socialists, and spent prolonged sojourns in Switzerland and England. In exile, he became the editor of the chief Socialist paper and an even more important figure in the SPD. Bernstein was an adherent of Marx and was personally close to Engels. He played a significant role in the Marxist orientation of the SPD. In the 1890s, however, general prosperity and the success of the SPD in German politics falsified a number of Marx's predictions. Bernstein set out to provide a more realistic doctrine for German socialism.

The middle of the book is devoted to a discussion of Revisionism. This includes a brief sketch of the Marxist background, a nice exposition of Bernstein's doctrines, a thoughtful discussion of the social background of Revisionism, and the reception of Revisionism in the German socialist movement. Revisionism involved abandonment of Marx's Hegelianism, including his model of history, a highly modified view of capitalism, and a strong commitment to democratic reformism and avoidance of revolutionary violence. As Gay points out, Revisionism fit well into the evolution of the Socialist movement because of the relative success of socialist trade unions and the SPD as a political force. Bernstein's ideas, nonetheless, were a source of considerable controversy and Bernstein became alienated from a number of his former friends.

The final section of the book is a concise narrative of Bernstein's later career and the history of the SPD during and after WWI. This covers the decision of the SPD to support the Reich government in the war, the great party schism, and Bernstein's principled dissent. While Bernstein did initially support the party consensus, he subsequently made the courageous decision to leave the party and dissent from the war. After the war, he was an outspoken critic who stressed German culpability for starting the war. Even after he rejoined the party and was re-elected to the Reichstag, he was a marginal figure in the party. Bernstein was equally vocal in denouncing the Bolsheviks (as was his old friend, the more orthodox Marxist Karl Kautsky). Bernstein was born just after the failed 1848 revolutions and died a few months prior to Hitler's accession to power. His life captures a great deal of the history of socialism in Germany.

Peter Gay's works on German history are always very much worth reading, and I found his early study on Eduard Bernstein useful as well. The book deals with Bernstein's life and thinking, with latter chapters focusing on reformist socialism. Now Bernstein's original works on reformism can be somewhat difficult, which is why this book is so valuable to a modern reader. Peter Gay covers the various aspects of Bernstein's theory in a clear manner without any ideological distortions, giving readers a good idea of what Bernstein was all about. The book was written in the 1950s, but as far as I can see it hasn't lost any of its relevancy.
