Claudia Walde spent over two years collecting alphabets by 154 artists from thirty countries to show the many different styles and approaches to lettering within the graffiti and street art cultures. All of the artists have roots in graffiti. Some are world renowned such as 123 Klan (Canada), Faith47 (South Africa), and Hera (Germany); others are lesser known or only now starting to emerge.

Each artist received the same instructions: design all twenty-six letters of the Latin alphabet within the limits of a single page of the book. How they approached this task and selected the media with which to express their ideas was entirely up to them, and the results encompass not just street art but sketches, sculpture, digital art, and photography. 500 color illustrations

This book covers style from A to Z.

This book is a great resource for anyone who has an interest in various graffiti styles/fonts. There are handwritten styles (tags), bubble letters (throw ups), simple letters, 3D letters, letters w/ characters, letters made with the human form, semi-wild style, and wild style pieces just to name a few.

As mentioned in the product description, taking part in this project are some familiar faces to the graffiti scene: Askew, Persue, Wane, 123 Klan, Ces, and Rime. Regarding artists I was not familiar with, this book helped me realize what I've been missing, and with the help of web sites provided throughout the book, I was able to pull up more art from those artists that were new to me.

Along with a web site listed for each artist, there is information about the crews they are a part of, mention of their favorite letter, and a paragraph of info. The paragraph might contain info about the artist, what graffiti means to them or what they love most about graffiti, and how they went about creating their alphabet. I loved how it mentioned that one writer woke up at 5 AM and went to painting his alphabet around the city before clocking in for work that day.

My only dislikes were that a couple corners of my cover were a tad bent. Also, I felt that with what was shown in regards to some artists' work, a lot was left to be desired when it came to the execution of their alphabets (eg Akor, Beet, and Loomit to name a few). Then again, that could be a matter of taste. With 154 different executions, there is something for everybody!

One reviewer mentioned their displeasure with the lack of colored executions. I went back and counted about 75 monotone letters. That didn't bother me so much, because it gave the letters a blackbook/sketch feel, and some letters are so nice that there's no need for the extra filler.

This book is well worth the money. If you have been unsure or thinking about buying this book, my advice is to buy it before it goes off the shelves again.

Write This One on Your Wall

This book was everything I was looking for. I'm not a graffiti writer, but I love to look at the really artistic graffiti and to include elements of it in my own artwork. This book details the alphabets used by many graffiti writers from all over the world, and it is absolutely OUTSTANDING in terms of beautifully photographed examples, brief bios of the writers, and their deconstructed lettering. While this book doesn't make copying or adapting the artwork foolproof, if you have some artistic ability you can learn to form your own style. I would recommend it to anyone who admires these urban geniuses.

Full of Mistakes!!! No use other than proving legit purchase.

I read a previous buyer's review cautioning about mistakes in this book. I was alarmed and discussed with my daughters' piano teacher. The teacher suggested that a few mistakes in each pieces is not that bad. The copy of downloaded sheet music used by my daughter also has some notes that sound very strange. The teacher said that she could correct the mistakes by listening to the actual music on the CD.

After receiving this book, we found that the mistakes are so numerous that correcting them is impossible, exactly as the previous reviewer said. This book is completely useless as a sheet music for real piano playing.

The only use this book has is to be presented in my daughter's exam or audition. The regulation requires authentic sheet music. We can bring this book as a prove that we paid our due to the composer of the music, but playing according to our print-out copy.

From the very beginning the teacher cautioned us that it is very likely that all the sheet music of Richard Clayderman published outside France will have some mistakes. I tried my best to buy French version, short of traveling all the way to France. This is the best I can manage, but this book is still full of mistakes.

This raises a question, is this book legitimate publication? Did the original French composers and publishers involve in the publication of this book? Were they suitably compensated?

For serious piano players that plan to use this book as sheet music, rather than bookshelf decoration, please heed the most unfavorable reviews on this book. Do not buy it, at least do not play it!

The music is easy to read

The music is easy to read. Another reviewer said some songs were "hand written" but my copy is standard music notation & easily read. I love the arrangement of "I Have a Dream" from MaMa Mia, fun song. Only improvement would be needs a spiral binding it just won't stay open. (I'll take it to Staples and have them spiral bind it)

About the Author

Dr. Francine Shapiro is the originator and developer of EMDR therapy. She is a Senior Research Fellow at the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto, California, Director of the EMDR Institute, and founder of the non-profit EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Programs, which provides pro bono training and treatment to underserved populations worldwide. She is a recipient of the International Sigmund Freud Award for Psychotherapy of the City of Vienna, the American Psychological Association Trauma Psychology Division Award for Outstanding Contributions to Practice in Trauma Psychology, and the Distinguished Scientific Achievement in Psychology Award, from the California Psychological Association. As a result of her work, over 70,000 clinicians have treated millions of people during the past 20 years. She is an invited speaker at psychology conferences and universities worldwide, and has authored numerous articles, chapters, and books about EMDR therapy, including the primary text Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing: Basic Principles, Protocols and Procedures. How Everyone Can Get Past Your Past

This is an outstanding book on overcoming abusive experiences of one's past regardless of what they are. Dr. Shapiro makes an excellent point that everyone has a past to get past. Unfortunately, some people, unaware that all memories get stored in one's mind as long as the pain associated with these memories remains unprocessed, get stuck in the past, because they do not deal with painful memories. This author, insightfully, categorizes all painful memories as either a large "T" or a small "t" trauma. Large "T" traumas would be the worst things that happen to people from what has been called "PTSD"--Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. These would be such things as: physical and sexual abuse, especially in childhood, and surviving torture, etc. Small "t" traumas would be such things as: teenage bullying, a bad marriage, verbal abuse, loss of job, loss of financial security, loss of love, etc. Dr. Shapiro wisely states that several small "ts" may be as painful as one large "T."

Religious or spiritual abuse, especially fear of being tormented in hell fire forever, may also be a large "T" depending on the age of onset, severity, and duration. Such abuse may well result in what I have termed another form of PTSD—“Post Traumatic Spiritual Disorder.” All of this information is in perfect accord with what I, as a Board Certified Chaplain and Licensed Professional Counselor, have shared with my patients and have written in my books, "Spiritual Terrorism: Spiritual Abuse from the Womb to the Tomb" and "Christianity Without Insanity: For Optimal Mental/Emotional/Physical Health."

The light is on, and I now know where the lightswitch is!

I have a feeling that the two people that wrote 3 star reviews with criticism didn't read the whole book. I just finished it, and I feel like the light has been turned on for me. Actually, it is better than that: I now know where the light switch is (the exercises used within the context of Dr Shapiro's model.) The stories of other people's lives are great, but the exercises that Dr Shapiro suggests have really connected the dots for me. I understand myself, my feelings, my automatic reactions, and my knee jerk responses. I also understand my strengths - and why some things get to me at times and not at other times. I am more understanding of why others behave as they do. You know how people always say "don't take it personally" or "it isn't about you?" Well I get it now - it really IS about their own past experience. I also get why the self care things people say are so important ARE so essential - in order to be present and respond to life from TODAY rather than the experiences of the PAST. I might decide to see an EMDR therapist at some point, but what I have gained so far is like finally being able to breathe. It is fascinating and freeing to have a window into myself and some techniques for change.

This is a must-read for everyone, regardless of your ...

This is a must-read for everyone, regardless of your mental health. The appeal to the intellectual part of my brain is what sold it for me. It began to make so much sense that unprocessed memories from childhood will "trigger" *reactions* in adulthood. Anyone who spends any time reflecting on why they react in certain ways and then tries to work on it, will have 1,000 a-ha moments reading this book. It also speaks to how the brain is a finicky thing. Just because you haven't suffered a capital T trauma, it still can nag at you in unsuspecting ways. For all the people who had unkind teachers, coaches, unsupportive parents, this will be help you understand why you might find yourself emotionally saying from time to time: "Jeez it bugs me so much when" but intellectually saying "Jeez it shouldn't bug me so much when" :)

A thorough, well-researched, heavily annotated, but pendantically boring catalogue of African Art in European Collections, 1400-1800. Small, barely adequate b/w photos of hundreds of largely unremarkable African items, which contribute to a book with all the passion and fascination of a automobile repair manual. Includes a CD-ROM, which is a boring electronic version of the boring printed book. This work probably took a lifetime to compile, but that just makes it all the more sad. Leigh Michaels never fails to please. The Fake Fiance is a fast paced contemporary romance, but the story is deeper and more complex than a simple love story. It's a relationship story, about how far a daughter will go to help her father when he is unfairly attacked, plus, a legal story about what happens when false accusations are made in the workplace.

Fun, full of man/woman tensions - business, challenge and sexual

Leigh Michaels has a very special style of writing, mixed with lots of tensions, personal interactions, fun, laughter. Always light hearted, with some semi-tense moments and yet good story line. Always enjoy her books and have read most at least once; now building a kindle library.

Seeking the missing link between teaching and learning

There's a fair amount that we know about learning, and we often place great importance on teaching, but we seem to take for granted the way teaching and learning are related. It is not at all obvious how teaching leads to learning (assuming that it does!) or what is the best way to create an environment for learning. We do have a lot of relevant evidence, but it is rare to see it put together in a useful way.

That's why this is such a wonderful book, the kind that not only teaches you something useful but uses its own principles as an example to do so. The Architecture of Learning illustrates in simple but detailed terms what it takes to get from raw experience to practical skills and knowledge and then provides you with tools to do the same. Successfully applying his own teaching insights to the structure of this book, Washburn leads you on a journey to personal understanding of the learning process chapter by chapter by first introducing the core processes needed for learning and then progressively deepening and expanding the discussions and examples and using them in different ways and relating them to previous experience.

Many theories of learning emphasize how it builds on previous learning. This book illustrates the process with specific examples and analogies that bring it to life. Most interestingly to me, in the process Washburn effectively links his general learning model with the concept of expertise and its emphasis on the difference between the way experts and novices represent knowledge. He expands on the expertise model by not only acknowledging the critical value of deliberate extended practice, but also describing what is happening prior to effective practice and following effective practice that makes it effective and allows it to transfer to real applications. By simplifying the process and making particular stages clear, Washburn helps instructors understand the prerequisites for making practice successful (often neglected!), and what they need to do to make it useful outside of educational settings (rarely accomplished!).

The strong point of this book is the way it synthesizes and consolidates major theories of learning in a useful practical way ...

The composite model used here describes 4 essential interacting and iterative processes required for learning: (1) accumulating "reference experiences" upon which further learning can be based, (2) labelling and sorting our experience, (3) relating new ideas to past experiences to create deeper understanding, (4) applying what we know in increasingly broader and more realistic contexts.

Each of these subprocesses produces different kinds of outcomes used in the overall learning process. (1) Experience produces reference experiences. (2) Labelling and sorting produce sequences of key points that help us comprehend. (3) Relating ideas generates the understanding we need in order to usefully practice and apply new skills and ideas. (4) Rehearsing the application of new skills and ideas with feedback makes learning available for real situations.

The meat of The Architecture of Learning is then the blueprints that make use of this model. Learning new skills requires somewhat different focus on these different processes than subject matter content, even though the same basic proceses still apply. The blueprints provide a general framework for designing instruction so that the essential learning processes are all engaged, with the proper focus for the type of subject matter. For example, skills require more rehearsal and less relating to past experience than non-skill content, but relating to past experience is still needed at various points to produce the intermediate outcomes needed to prepare for effective rehearsal. This is all taken into consideration by the useful general blueprints in Architecture of Learning.

My biggest concern reading this book was trying to come up with a good strategy for sizing the units of material that this approach would apply to. Breaking some material into 16 or so instructional segments as done in these blueprints would obviously be excessive, although the exercise of doing so might still be useful for an instructor for its own sake. There's a lot of room for judgment here in just how to take a curriculum and divide it up into units that can be structured using these patterns.

Perhaps the most exciting chapters for me are the ones on creative and critical thinking. I really like the way this book makes it clear that various thinking skills are used together with content to deepen learning. I think that's one of the biggest missing pieces in the way learning is often represented. People realize they're missing something in learning, but they seem to look for the missing piece in strange places like "unconscious" learning rather than looking more closely at the constituent skills we use to process ideas.

There's a lot of room for thought here, and a very useful general approach for thinking about designing effective instructional experiences.

A Great Resource for All Grade Levels and Content Areas

The Architecture of Learning is a comprehensive resource for helping teachers understand how students learn and how to teach in the way that best engages learning processes noted in the text. The focus of the book is on tapping into the natural learning processes in order for students to truly comprehend what they are being taught, instead of just memorizing facts. Important issues like emotions, motivation, and attention are also clearly addressed and tied into student learning. The author does an excellent job of comparing current ineffective teaching strategies with the AoL blueprint and explains why it is so effective.

As a 4th/5th grade teacher of language arts and history, it is easy to recognize that Dr. Washburn offers an alternative teaching philosophy to the traditional textbook methods. One of the most important aspects of the book is the focus on real-world connections to skills and content required by state and national standards. With the creation of pattern statements and reference points, students are given the opportunity to make concrete connections to the material they are working with.

Teachers of all grade levels and subject areas will benefit from reading this book. The specific grade-level examples spark creative ideas about how blueprints can be used in many different content areas. With clear explanations and easy-to-read figures in every chapter, this book is an invaluable guide for teachers who are tired of the monotony of re-teaching every year because the students forgot what they "learned" last year. The Architecture of Learning provides the resources and direction needed for teachers to take their classrooms from average to extraordinary.

Great book on teaching and learning

Although this book is primarily aimed at teachers, it is a very informative book for anyone who wants to learn about learning and thinking. Washburn begins by outlining the five building blocks of learning: experience (encountering raw data), comprehension (sorting and organizing raw data), elaboration (examining organized data for patterns and connecting new data to past experiences), application (practicing within the classroom), and intention (practicing outside the classroom). For teachers to properly teach and for students to learn, their learning should progress through all these blocks so that there is a transition from data to knowledge to understanding, and ultimately, to utility of this knowledge. In addition to the elaborate discussion of these blocks and their intersections, Washburn also does a thorough job of explaining the great importance of critical thinking to learning, and discusses the importance of emotion, attention, motivation, creativity, and technology to teaching and learning. The text is complemented by numerous examples throughout the book, making the read more enjoyable and relevant. This is a great resource on teaching and learning!
