VALUE FOR MONEY, BEGINNERS BOOK ON BEAR MAKING

This would have to be the best value for money, beginners book on bear making that has been published in the last 10 or more years. The author has written this for the home sewer and doesn't assume that there is a teddy bear supplies shop just up the road where you can buy those expensive specialty items like joint sets, mohair fur, etc. Everything you need can be found at home in the sewing cupboard, at the local sewing shop or general store; eg: like buttons for joints, teddy jumpers/sweaters out of socks.
There are numerous bear patterns of various sizes; eg: dad, mum & baby; both jointed and unjointed, along with clothes patterns for just about all of them! Estelle also explains how to customise the clothes patterns for different bears and garments; eg making a shirt into a coat. I still use this book if I want to dress bears from other patterns. For example I compare the bear that I'm making with Estelles bear pattern pieces; ie leg to leg for trousers, body to body for dresses or jump suits, etc; and when I find one that is similar I use the clothes pattern that fits Estelle's bear as a base clothes pattern for the bear I am making.
The bear patterns themselves are excellent for beginners as all the bears a quite chubby (makes for great cuddling!), so are easier to sew, to turn inside out and to stuff - no narrow nooks and crannies to make for difficult stuffing. Some of the head patterns don't have a full head insert ie down to the nose, again making for easy sewing and more chance of a "nice muzzle/nose" for a beginner.
Virtually all the bears in the book are made from something other than mohair, either synthetic fur, felt, coat fabric, etc, so you get a pretty good idea of what your bear will ACTUALLY look like. Mohair is gorgeous, but is often deceptive as it is usually a woven fabric, which doesn't stretch, so if you use synthetic fur, felt or coat fabric, for example, you end up with a very different bear to the mohair one you are hoping to reproduce.
(I have a 1980ish edition of this book around which this review is written. PLEASE NOTE: there may be changes to the later edition SO the comments in the following paragraph may not be correct for this more recent edition.) Full colour books are the norm these days, so it is disappointing there aren't MORE of the gorgeous colour photos - although there are still plenty of black and white ones. There is quite alot of text, (including the usual "teddy bear" history), which comes under logical headings so it is generally easy to find info on subject. All the patterns are on pages of the book - great - no misplaced pattern inserts.
This is a value for money book - lots of bear patterns with clothes patterns and how to do's. You won't make a Stieff reproduction, but you will get lots of practise with the numerous options this book offers.

Making Teddy Bears and clothes

The things I liked about this book is it goes into history of Teddy Bears.
Seems to have good instructions on contructing your bear and the clothes.
It has a lot of cute clothing patterns including sweaters for your bear and how to make them from your old sweaters.

My only con and it's really not a big deal, is that as it's an older book it doesn't have as many step by step photos as the newer books seem to have. It does just not as many. And much of it is in black and white. Still, it seems to have a lot of useful information.

I am very new (extremely) to bear making and am not an experienced sewer. But I love the bears!

This is a fantastic book for people learning to make bears

This is a fantastic book for people learning to make bears. I really love the miniature bear patterns, the jointed bear with the hidden buttons, as well as the realistic bear. There are good instructions for making bear clothes from human clothes, even thought I never cared much for dressed teddies. Mine are little nudists, but some of the clothes are highly tempting!

I always buy a solution manual, but this one I would not buy again!

All the answers where not given. It was quite random as to which
where solved and overall it was of poor quality and did not hold
up well with use. The pages began to fall of the spine after about
two months of use, Bad quality. I purchased a 3 month chegg
subscription for about half the price though and got the majority
of the answers from there, in a much clearer and concise way.
(Although they are still working on getting more answers done)

Clear with Good Examples

This is an older text but it is written in a clear manner that would benefit students taking their 1st ODE class. Prof. Ross gives the theory but follows it up with examples to clarify for the student trying to understand from a practical sense. His Power Series discussions and especially the Method of Frobenius is very helpful. It would be easy for a student to get lost, but he breaks it down in a clear manner with all the subtle issues. If you are having trouble, this book may help. I did not rate 5 Star as the older version, which I have, is a bit lean on Laplace Transforms. In such a case, I would suggest Strum and Ward workbook text, entitled " Laplace Transform Solution of Differential Equations - A Programmed Text, which is outstanding.

Great solutions manual

I'm writing this review based on my time with the manual despite owning the 3rd edition textbook. This book is obviously limited to its use as not all questions from the 3rd edition are in this solutions manual however, answers are explained thoroughly and is done so in a similar fashion to the book. Not all solutions are presented, and solutions to even numbered problems are listed in the back. If you own the 4th edition, I'd recommend the buy in a heartbeat; if you own the 3rd edition like me, this is the best we're going to get as the 3rd edition solutions manual is unfortunately out of print. This textbook[3rd edition] and its solutions manual are amazing and deserve a new version or at the very least get re-printed!

Twenty years have passed since South Africans were being shot or hacked or burned to death in political conflict; and the memory of the trauma has faded. Some 20 500 people were nevertheless killed between 1984 and 1994. The conventional wisdom is that they died at the hands of a state-backed Third Force, but the more accurate explanation is that they died as a result of the people’s war the ANC unleashed.

As the people’s war accelerated from September 1984, intimidation and political killings rapidly accelerated. At the same time, a remarkably effective propaganda campaign put the blame for violence on the National Party government and its alleged Inkatha surrogate. Sympathy for the ANC soared, while its rivals suffered crippling losses in credibility and support.

By 1993 the ANC was able to dominate the negotiating process, as well as to control the (undefeated) South African police and army and bend them to its will. By mid-1994 it had trounced its rivals and taken over government.

People’s War shows the extraordinary success of this war in giving the ANC a virtual monopoly on power. It also shows, in part at least, the great cost at which this was achieved. Apart from the killings, the terror, and the destruction that marked the period from 1984 to 1994, the people’s war set in motion forces that cannot easily be reversed. For violence cannot be turned off ‘like a tap’, as the ANC suggested, and neither can anarchy easily be converted into order.

Anthea Jeffery holds law degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand and from Cambridge, and a doctorate in human rights law from the University of London. Her previous books include The Natal Story: Sixteen years of conflict and The Truth about the Truth Commission. Both books have been acclaimed for their meticulous and objective approach, and for breaking new ground on important and contentious issues.

This book challenges the mainstream narrative of the apartheid struggle.

Jeffery provides a thorough and objective analysis of the formation and violence carried out by the African National Congress. Those who are looking for answers beyond what the mainstream media has shown should read this book!

It is not an apology for the apartheid state, but it does question the legitimacy of ANC's struggle against the apartheid. The greed, the violence, the women - all exposed and discussed.

An insightful view beyond that of the politically correct

A colleague who holds a PhD in history and taught at a staff college recommended that I read this book.
What interested me was the visit of the African National Congress (ANC) to Vietnam to learn about the prosecution of a "people's war".
Having previously attended courses with members for the ANC's armed wing, I wondered what they were doing in a region that had little to do with Africa. This book gave the answer!

The suppression of any opposition (in this case the IFP) was one of the ANC's goals.

Having lived through the period in question I have seen the evidence that Jefferey presents. The elimination of opposing views through intimidation and murder was the daily occurrence then. The media was reluctant to criticise the ANC. The book explains why.

It is not a pleasant or happy book to read. It also shows the type of mentality that South Africa now has in government with corruption, violence, crime, nepotism and ineptitude.

An important and insightful book for those who wish to make sense of the situation in South Africa under the ANC.

About the Author
Sybilla Beckmann earned her undergraduate degree in mathematics from Brown University and a PhD in mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania. She taught and did research in mathematics at Yale University for two years. Since then, she has been at the University of Georgia. When she had children, she became very interested in helping prospective teachers understand and appreciate the mathematics they will teach. This interest led to her book. In her spare time, she enjoys playing the piano, weaving, attending classical music concerts, and traveling with her family.

excellent book for learning to think about elementary math

The recent review of books and programs in mathematics teacher education in America by the National Council on Teacher Quality rated this book the best one in the country, and rated the mathematics education program at UGA where this book is used and was developed, as the ONLY "exemplary" program in the entire nation. Obviously not everyone finds it easy to read, but it does serve its purpose of helping, and requiring, the student to understand the concepts behind the mathematics. It is not easy to teach from this book, as I have learned by experience. The reason was not the fault of the book, but rather the extreme difficulty in getting "test oriented" students to stop looking at mathematics as just a list of formulas and procedures, and to begin trying to grasp the ideas which underly them. Understanding is harder than calculating, and having read it, I can easily understand why this book is professionally considered the best one in the country for making that transition in elementary math teaching.

Please note that the one star review here is not for the book but for the physical condition of the copy received by the buyer, and hence for Amazon's service itself. Hence with a 3 star and a 5 star review the average should be 4 stars for this book so far.

This book, and the activity book that comes with it, was required for an education class I'm taking, and I found it very interesting. I plan on keeping it to use in the future when I become a teacher; the activity book included has a large variety of activities that can be used to help students learn. I highly recommend this book if you are interested in teaching any form of math in the future.

Well intentioned, yet somewhat superfluous and disorganized...

I have taught the first semester of a two semester sequence from chapters 1-7 of this book (2nd edition). The spirit of the book and the accompanying Activities Manual is good: there is an important emphasis on understanding the "why" behind the procedures in arithmetic, which should help future teachers help elementary students make the later transition to algebra.

However, there are some shortcomings. The author claims to cover the basic arithmetic operations for all real numbers from the start of the book, but then at times the dialog is tacitly restricted to whole numbers, integers, etc. I question whether multiplication of fractions should be discussed at length before the connection between division of integers and fractions has been well established. Perhaps it would be best to give an overview of all the different types of real numbers in Chapter 1, but then build up to the rational numbers by trying to "invert" the operations of addition and multiplication of whole numbers. The further need to extend the rational numbers to the real numbers should then be given its own discussion, along with implications on the various computational procedures of arithmetic. As an applied mathematician, I recognize the importance of applications, but I also think future teachers should have a solid understanding of why our numbers are constructed the way they are.

I question the ordering of some sections, for example, percents problems that require proportional thinking are introduced well before the section on ratio and proportion. Also, the development is often inefficient (some sections or activities could be easily combined) and many of the activities are well intentioned but leave students wondering what exactly they are being asked or feeling like they are being asked the same question many times. Many elementary education students don't realize they can think about a problem multiple ways -- they often cling to the one method/procedure they may have memorized at some point -- thus, they need more specific guidance when exploring alternatives.

Finally, it would be nice if the activities could match different teaching styles. For instance, consistently starting with a classroom activity, then wrapping up with a discussion, OR, a more traditional introductory lecture followed by a time for activities and explorations for the second half of class. The existing arrangement is sort of a mixture of the two.

Note: There is a 3rd edition of the book coming out, which addresses at least some of these issues.

About the Author

I grew up with very low self esteem, and it has affected my adult life in a very negative way, ie...settling for less than what I want, relationships ending, no self respect, etc.
I bought this book about a month ago, and the impact on my way of thinking and behaving is awesome! I know I will always have to fight my bad habits from the past, but this book has given me the tools to change my life!

Outstanding Book on Rural Surveillance Methods

Really an outstanding book on surveillance methods - especially those conducted in rural areas and remote country. The book is very comprehensive and covers a broad range of topics: fieldcraft, hides and Ghillie suits, patrol techniques, observation and close target reconnaissance, all types of equipment (incl. radios, antennas, and cameras), and methods for reporting information. I was very impressed by the degree of detail that the author has included in this book - the effort he has put into the writing is just phenomenal.

If you have any interest in surveillance techniques, this book is a must have for your bookshelf - along with "Surveillance Tradecraft" by Peter Jenkins. The two books go hand-in-hand.
