Many textbooks have been published on the subject of construction scheduling. Many of them provide excellent information on a variety of scheduling subjects. Unfortunately, they are often limited in their scope, often omitting scheduling subjects that might be of particular interest to the reader. This text is written to provide broad coverage on all major scheduling subjects.

My first employment with a construction contractor was a summer job in the 1960s. Although I was given many different assignments, I have vivid memories of the arrow diagram network that I was asked to draw by hand. Of course, I just had a class on the fundamentals of arrow diagramming, so the scheduling assignment was reasonably easy for me. A few years later while working for a different firm, my primary responsibility was scheduling. The scheduling effort was largely focused on the coordination of subcontractors on several different projects for which I used the precedence diagramming method. It was during this period that I developed a strong appreciation for the value of effective scheduling and the use of precedence diagrams.

There are many approaches to providing scheduling information. Some of these are described briefly in Chapter 1. This textbook is written with a major emphasis on precedence diagramming, with only the last chapter addressing arrow diagramming. Although I recognize that most scheduling is done with precedence diagrams, I also feel that an introduction to the subject of arrow diagramming is appropriate. In academic settings, I have found that students can grasp arrow diagramming more easily if they have not already been exposed to precedence diagrams. For this reason, instructors who plan to lecture on arrow diagrams should consider jumping to Chapter 16 after the first two chapters are covered. Chapter 3 explains the fundamentals of precedence diagrams. Regardless of the scheduling technique used, successfully using scheduling information is rooted in beginning with accurate time estimates for activity durations as discussed in Chapter 4.

One scheduling topic seldom addressed in scheduling texts, especially in detail, is that of contract provisions related to scheduling. This text devotes an entire chapter to this subject (Chapter 5). Resource leveling and resource allocation are described in Chapter 6. The impact of scheduling provisions on cash flow is also addressed (Chapter 7). Manual solutions are described for solving problems related to resource utilization and cash flow. Although such problems are often solved by computer, it is helpful for schedulers to understand the process of arriving at a solution in order to fully comprehend computer solutions.

Schedules are management tools and, as such, they should be used. It is through the proper use of schedules that management is able to make informed decisions about scheduling activities. This use includes updating the schedules when the schedule information ceases to be useful for making informed decisions. This process is described in Chapter 8.

Chapter 9 addresses computer applications. This chapter is not a user's manual, nor is it a proponent for any particular scheduling software. The more widely used software programs are described to some extent, but this is not to be construed as an endorsement of any particular product. The purpose of the chapter is to familiarize the reader with some of the basic scheduling concepts that are addressed by computer software.

Chapter 10 describes earned value concepts. Project schedules are generally adversely impacted by changes in the project. Chapter 11 provides information for quantifying such impacts. Such information is often required when a claim is prepared. Chapter 12 presents a brief discussion of the value of schedules in litigation.

Short-interval schedules are addressed in Chapter 13. This treatise is far more extensive than any known writings or papers on the subject. The use of short-interval schedules is vital to the successful completion of many construction projects. Although concepts of their use and application are simple, the subject warrants a discussion in any serious text on scheduling.

Linear scheduling (discussed in Chapter 14) is a relatively new scheduling technique used in the construction industry. Linear scheduling is a viable method on a variety of projects that would otherwise be difficult to schedule. Schedulers should consider the use of linear scheduling on projects that lend themselves to this technique. The use of probabilistic duration estimates is described in Chapter 15. Although the use of PERT is perhaps minimal in the construction industry, the basic concepts should be understood.

It is perhaps rare for a text to be written entirely by one person. I certainly can make no such claim. Others have provided valuable assistance in helping me compile all of the information for this text. Dr. Ian Flood also offered valuable comments as the initial text was being finalized. The efforts of Bruce Jamieson were instrumental in compiling the information on short-interval scheduling, and Rory McCarty contributed to the chapter on litigation. A considerable amount of the material on linear scheduling was developed by Greg Hanby, Phil Nelson, Brendan Kennedy, and H. C. Phillips. Dr. Robert Shawcroft contributed significantly by providing me with some scheduling class notes that eventually became part of this text. Most of all, I must thank my good friend John Gambatese, who served as my mentor as the second edition evolved. He reviewed the manuscript for grammatical correctness and made many suggestions for changes and improvements in the second edition. This version of the text is a true credit to him. Of course, as in the first edition, Chapter 9 is wholly his contribution.

Excellent Book on Scheduling and Planning

After getting put in to a position where I suddenly had to become a planning guru I was at a loss. After readng several white papers and other books this one was recommended to me by a colleague.
This is a great book that covers schduling from beginning to end. I knew from courses and experience how to create schedules and how to get ownership and consultants to buy in to them but usually after that it was passed off to another PM.
Working on a project where there have been delays and the client is very schedule saavy I turned to this book to set up my weekly routine. This book is packed with more information than any other two books I have read on the subject (that is 5 since Jan 09).

This book offers a good start and covers everythign from Earned Value Analysis to Schedule Control to Legal Ramifications of poor planing and schedule maintenance. If you buy one book this is the one to get.

This book was a required textbook for a course, however if you are looking for a book to help you with planning and scheduling I would recommend another. This book is written in a circular and sometimes unclear way. Explanations for difficult EV or PERT calculations are not easy to follow and sometimes critical formulaic information is buried in paragraph text while other non-critical formulas are called out clearly.

I was hoping for a really good star wars read

I was hoping for a really good star wars read, like with the thrawn trilogy and the vong books. but what I got was a overly simplistic, shallow,and predictable story. Flat characters, unimaginative dialogue, boring story. It reads like it is for a 5th grader. almost childish. i'm really disappointed.

American Indian Movement (AIM) activist Peltier, arrested more than two decades ago on charges stemming from conflict with the FBI on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, has become a symbol of the oppression of Indians and other indigenous people. Indeed, he is perhaps the most famous inmate in the U.S., regarded by many as a political prisoner, with Robert Redford, author Peter Mathiesson, former U.S. attorney general Ramsey Clark, and others calling for his release. He remains incarcerated, often in horrific conditions. As if engaged in the sun dance, in which apparently unendurable sufferings are embraced as a spiritual testimony, Peltier writes of his life, before and behind bars, with anger but not rancor. Since his youth as a warrior, he has become a spiritual elder whose words offer much to Indians and non-Indians alike. "We don't need more prisons," he writes. "We need more compassion. Part manifesto, part memoir, a standout collection by the celebrated, long-imprisoned American Indian Movement co-founder and activist. Peltier, a Sioux Indian, has been in federal prison since 1977, convicted of killing two FBI agents during the 1973 siege at Wounded Knee, S.D. Peltier asserts that he did not commit these murders, writing simply, Innocence has a single voice that can only say over and over, I didnt do it. Guilt has a thousand voices, all of them lies. (In his preface, former attorney general Ramsey Clark makes a compelling argument for why we should believe Peltier, a case also made by Peter Matthiessen in his much-litigated book In the Spirit of Crazy Horse). In this anthology, Peltier charts the course of his activism, describing his evolution from a young man on a South Dakota reservation who wanted what other young men in his circumstances wanteda car, a jobto a political organizer keenly aware of the injustices visited past and present on Americas indigenous peoples. Although he too easily falls into sloganeering (We are the voices of the earth. We speak for those who are not yet born. When you exclude us, you exclude your own conscience. We are your conscience!), Peltier has much to say about American Indian politics, a dauntingly complex set of issues; among other things, he insists that the US government follow a Canadian model in offering reparations for historical wrongs. He also advances the plausible view that the siege at Wounded Knee was a sideshow meant to disguise a deal through which a uranium-rich portion of the Pine Ridge Sioux reservation was ceded to the federal government. Writing more personally, Peltier recounts the intricacies of living behind bars. As a houseguest in hell, he writes, you learn that the devil has many mansions, and you keep shuttling between them for no known reason. INNOCENT MAN--AND EVERYBODY KNOWS

I LIVED IN NEBRASKA WHEN "INCIDENT AT OGLALLA" RESERVATION IN S.DAKOTA HAPPENED. (SEE THE DVD).
HUNDREDS OF INDIANS KILLED- MEN,WOMEN,CHILDREN,BABIES . AND, WE KNEW IF THAT REZ WASN'T SITTING ON ONE OF THE LARGEST URANIUM DEPOSITS IN THE U.S., THEY COULD HAVE LIVED IN PEACE.
THEN 2 CIA AGENTS GET KILLED, MAYBE BY THEIR OWN OPERATIVES. THREE INDIANS CHARGED..JURY IN IOWA FOUND TWO INNOCENT OF ALL CHARGES. SO THEY MOVED THE PELTIER TRIAL TO THE MOST HOSTILE OF ENVIRONMENTS, GAVE FALSE EVIDENCE, THREATENED WITNESSES, BLATANTLY LIED UNDER OATH... AND FOUND A CLEARLY INNOCENT MAN GUILTY-- OF STANDING UP FOR INDIAN'S RIGHTS AGAINST "THE MACHINE OF THE MAN" THE CIA.

Leonard Peltier: He Didn't Do It! Read his story and send a Petition to the President for a Presidential Pardon!

There is NO doubt whatsoever, that Leonard Peltier has been imprisoned falsely. Even A District Court Judge who reviewed the evidence several yrs ago, ruled that the evidence against him didn't hold up, circumstantial AND contrived. It is within the power of the President to give Leonard Peltier a Presidenntial pardon. There is a Petition online that one can sign and send to Obama. Whether or not it will do any good remains to be seen. This is a travesty and Justice was denied AND continues to be. He's in his 70's and ill. He needs to be released NOW and should have been decades ago because He Did Not Kill the two Agents. From what can be learned from reading in Peltier's own words (as the man who was there!) it is even more possible that the two agents were killed by what the military calls "friendly fire," but rather than own up, they pinned the deaths on the man they most wanted imprisoned: Leonard Peltier, and they got away with it.

I cannot emphasize enough that what we, as a nation, have done in the name of, so-called, progress is atrocious and abominable. I mean we decry what other countries do in terms of policies and prisoners, but when it comes to our own national priorities, we can do no wrongs. Unfortunately as this book exquisitely expresses, we're no better than, say, South Africa during apartheid. We just dress it up in different terms and don't even acknowledge such when it goes on, despite the many attempts to open up our shadowy government policies to civilian viewing and oversight. Everyone should read this book, in my opinion, because it underscores the gross negligence of the US government toward the native peoples of this country.

Ellaworth, yes or no

I am an intermediate turner, and do both bowl and spindle work. This book is heavily based on using the Ellsworth "signature gouge" for face grain - the bowls, pots and vessels. I had an Ellsworth gouge, because of seeing his video, before buying the book. To use this book you will either have to buy one, or regrind another bowl gouge to his form. I recommend it, although I'd take some of the instructions with a grain of salt. Like most skilled turners whose books I've read, or videos seen, he has a particular dedication to his style. An understandable thing as each of them has developed a skill and a style over years.

If I were to have three books on turning I'd have this Ellsworth book, and Richard Raffan's Turning Wood and his Turning Bowls. Raffan uses classic fingernail gouges and Ellsworth his signature gouge. I bounce between them, sometimes I like the classical and sometimes the signature, depending on the wood and the cut.

A final note, my first signature gouge was a 1/2" (flute width, 5/8" shaft). I work on a midi lathe and have since bought a 3/8" as well. I'd reground another 3/8" to the Ellsworth shape, but went for the original once I got the book. Both work well on my turnings, but if you are on a midi I'd go for the 3/8" first. Packard Woodworking sells both online in the USA.

Buy the book, but don't take it as gospel. Use Ellsworth's cuts, and the classical cuts, and find your own style. A final comment on books versus video, view the video but buy the book, you will find it is easier to remind yourself of the cut opening a book to the page rather than skipping through the video.

Fabulous Book

I have been turning less than two years but have read more than a dozen books on turning and own three of Raffan's and Keith Rowley's book. I have had the opportunity to see Dave Ellsworth demontrate at a symposium. I really like his book! Reading parts of the book reminded me of the notes I took at his demo covering points I was not aware of or failed to realize the importance. It is an inspirational book and covers topics frequently missed in other books like making your own tools. It has a great chapter on Design. It is probably not the first book a new turner would buy as it does not cover basics as well as some others like Keith Rowley's Wouldturning: a Foundation Course. But if you have advanced to bowls and hollow forms you need to get this book.

The book was both very practical, as well as a most enjoyable read. The "how to" segments on bowl turning and hollowing were complemented by the discussion on design. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in turning.

About the Author
Camp Kirkland graduated from Florida State University with Bachelor and Master of Music Education degrees, and went on to teach band at the elementary, secondary and collegiate levels. He has performed on euphonium and trombone with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra,River City Brass Band and a number of touring bands and orchestras. Camp is best known for his pioneer work in reestablishing instrumental music as a viable medium in today’s church. His position as Instrumental Director at First Baptist Church in Jacksonville was the first of its kind. With several hundred choral and instrumental publications, Camp Kirkland remains a leader in the church orchestra growth phenomenon. He is also much in demand as a conductor and seminar clinician. Camp is currently a free lance composer and arranger residing with his wife, Fran, in Florida.

About the Author
Christine McMahon Sutton grew up in Iowa and is a graduate of the University of Iowa in Iowa City. She was a news reporter until 1986, when she joined the staff of the Iowa Medical Society in West Des Moines. At IMS, she was vice president of communications and editor of Iowa Medicine. She was an editor and health care writer for Oklahoma Magazine in Tulsa from 2001-2006. In 2006, she wrote the historical text One Hundred Years of Medicine in Oklahoma, which was published in the Oklahoma State Medical Association Journal on the occasion of that state’s centennial. She also wrote historical articles for the Oklahoma Dental Association Journal. In 2009, Christine and her former co-worker Cheri Jensen founded Management and Event Services, a home-based company that provides administrative services for the Iowa Association of County Medical Examiners, the Iowa Association of Pathologists and the Iowa Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Christine has two children and three grandchildren. She and her dog Lucy live quietly in a small town in Iowa.

Inspiring, informative, amazing

Christine McMahon Sutton has created an invaluable resource for caregivers. In touching and honest essays, she documents the journey she shared with her husband Gery--a thriving physician who specialized in geriatric care--from the time he was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's to the celebration of his life four years later. This book is filled with countless moments of "it's not just me" recognition (financial struggles, frustration, mind-numbing fatique, guilt, grief, confusion, insensitivity, anger, to name a few), but it is so much more. It is a hard-working guide to being an effective and compassionate advocate, to living in the moment, to remembering to laugh and to cherishing life, even when it deals the cruelest of blows.

Good job Christine

I knew Dr. Sutton, from being a nurse at hospital in Claremore. He would spend time in the evenings when making his rounds, talking to us about his kids and our kids. He would bring some of them with him on weekends to make his rounds. He would take them with him to the nursing homes on weekends. Everyone loved Dr. Sutton. My best friend was a patient of his. We had gone to nursing school together, she became sick and died. He was very good about talking to us and helping us to understand this tragedy. He attended her funeral service. He was truly an amazing man and physician.
I was blessed to have worked with him. The book reaffirms what a good person and Doctor he was. He was just a down to earth good human being.

About the Author

For 33 years, Steven Heller was an art director at the New York Times, originally on the OpEd Page, and for almost 30 of those years with the New York Times Book Review. Currently, he is co-chair of the MFA Designer as Author Department, Special Consultant to the President of SVA for New Programs, and writes the Visuals column for the New York Times Book Review. He was the recipient of the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum's 2011 Design Mind Award. He writes frequently for Metropolis and other design magazines, and is author, co-author, and editor of over 100 books on design and popular culture.
