About the Author
Diana Rowland has lived her entire life below the Mason-Dixon line. She has worked as a bartender, a blackjack dealer, a pit boss, a street cop, a detective, a computer forensics specialist, a crime scene investigator, and a morgue assistant, which means that she's seen more than her share of what humans can do to each other and to themselves. She won the marksmanship award in her Police Academy class, has a black belt in Hapkido, and has handled numerous dead bodies in various states of decomposition. She presently lives in southern Louisiana with her husband and her daughter where she is deeply grateful for the existence of air conditioning. Continuation of a masterful saga

Huge fan of the series but getting to Page 9, I said "WTF" where is all the missing content, that should
have been between Book 7 and Book 8. I was annoyed with some of the plot in Book 7 and with Book 8 starting the way it did made me put it down and read other books the meantime.

Picking it up again while on vacation, Diana slowly filled in the missing gaps and the Kara is back on track again. Great content and even better plot development with insight into historical events culminating in an excellent novel. Shame on me for delaying the reading of the book as I could not put it down once I got started.

This is still one of the series that I continue to buy in paper format as that is where it all started.
Plus they are now cheaper than the kindle editions.

Now I have to wait to next instalment.

Demon secrets are revealed

This book started out a little slow reading for me, but it sure did pick up and grab me well before I was half way through. There is action and more action, crisis after crisis and you really get to feel how much love and caring is shared between the team as they deal with it all. I had been scared that Kara and Mzatal were no longer going to be a pair, as their love and respect for each other was huge to me, and very important. I NEED them to have a HEA. There is definitely hope for that, although their interaction in this book was fairly minimal. There was one scene with them on the Nexus that was so perfect it gave me goosebumps. I am so in love with those two. Kara is such a great character and she just keeps getting better. You learn a LOT about the demons and their heritage in this book. And the background of the demon world. It is a lot thrown at you in this book, but things and secrets are finally starting to be uncovered. I can't wait for the next book.

Intrigue and arcane..

What's not to love? Start with a world where there is some level of magic, then counter that with an alternate/parallel universe of full-on magic, and finally we come to book eight of adventure, romance, comic relief, and horror all tied in to a heroine who has grown in more than just her magic abilities. Kara was a loner with a boulder on her shoulder in the first book, but by book eight she not only has her entourage/posse/family-of-choice at her back, she can put aside her pride and accept a helping hand, and even get on her knees and beg if that's what the situation calls for. Sure, her inner dialogue shows she might still think of a few snarky comments (that I love to read) but she can hold her tongue when needed, or at least long enough to rethink her opinion. And now she's got the closest held secrets of the demon realm figured out or imparted to her, along with the knowledge that she and her friends need to prepare to face the most perilous situation of their lives (and considering the enemy demon lords, dimensional rifts, enemy demon army, ptarl-gone-wild, etc. and so on, they've already been challenged with, that's an understatement). But I can't tell you what the future challenge might be, you'll just have to read it and find out!

Before his journey begins, however, numerous disasters are described, all of which seem to have happened to members of the boy's crazy family, but not to him. Unfortunately, the events do not proceed with enough character development or imminent danger to keep even avid readers hooked. Once young Dickens and his seemingly sweet but ultimately murderous chaperone board the ship for America, the action picks up, but many youngsters may not stick with this long-winded, confusing novel to find that out. Humorous black-and-white cartoons appear throughout. If your library has the first two of the trilogy, by all means pick up the third. Otherwise, look for Debi Gliori's Pure Dead Magic (Knopf, 2001) to meet the requests of your Lemony Snicket fans.

Gr. 4-7. The third title in the Eddie Dickens trilogy finds the hapless young hero being sent to America on family business by Mad Uncle Jack. Eddie can't travel alone, however, and his sailing companion, Lady Constance, has a disconcerting history of "losing" employers and benefiting from their fortunes. Complicating matters are the discovery of Even Madder Aunt Maud (and her stuffed stoat) stowed away on board, a cargo of left shoes and a famous diamond, and a dastardly plot putting passengers at risk. Ultimately, things and thugs are well sorted out, leaving one to think that perhaps there's really no place like home, even if it happens to be Awful End. Like its predecessors, this quirky read, set in Victorian England, blends zany story lines and oddball characters with abundant, reader-directed digressions and commentary. Prose and format have vintage flair, as do the humorous, black-and-white illustrations. Lemony Snickett's fans will enjoy these (mis)adventures, which will be welcomed by series fans but can also stand nicely alone. Shelle Rosenfeld

I enjoy reading it to my wife and son (7) on an evening.

My son goes on to read it himself after we have finished one.

Start from the beginning with Awful End and go from there.

Just an short anatomically descriptive tryst in the woods (without penetration). Abigail Reynolds and Ayr Bray write much better adult prose and they give you wonderful stories to boot. This is tripe.

About the Author

Anthony Bedford is Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at the University of Texas at Austin. He received his B.S. degree at the University of Texas at Austin, his M.S. degree at the California Institute of Technology, and his Ph.D. degree at Rice University in 1967. He has industrial experience at Douglas Aircraft Company and at TRW, where he did structural dynamics and trajectory analyses for the Apollo program. He has been on the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin since 1968.

Dr. Bedford's main professional activity has been education and research in engineering mechanics. He has been principal investigator on grants from the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research, and from 1973 until 1983 was a consultant to Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico. His other books include Hamilton's Principle in Continuum Mechanics, Introduction to Elastic Wave Propagation (with D.S. Drumheller), and Mechanics of Materials (with K.M. Liechti).

Wallace T. Fowler holds the Paul D. and Betty Robertson Meek Professorship in Engineering in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Fowler received his B.A., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Texas at Austin, and has been on the faculty there since 1965. During Fall 1976, he was on the staff of the United States Air Force Test Pilot School, Edwards Air Force Base, California, and in 1981-1982 he was a visiting professor at the United States Air Force Academy. Since 1991 he has been Associate Director of the Texas Space Grant Consortium.

Dr. Fowler's areas of teaching and research are dynamics, orbital mechanics, and spacecraft mission design. He is author or coauthor of technical papers on trajectory optimization, attitude dynamics, and space mission planning and has also published papers on the theory and practice of engineering teaching. He has received numerous teaching awards including the Chancellor's Council Outstanding Teaching Award, the General Dynamics Teaching Excellence Award, the Halliburton Education Foundation Award of Excellence, the ASEE Fred Merryfield Design Award, and the AIAA-ASEE Distinguished Aerospace Educator Award. He is a member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers at the University of Texas at Austin. He is a licensed professional engineer, a member of several technical societies, and a Fellow of both the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the American Society for Engineering Education. In 2000-2001, he served as president of the American Society for Engineering Education.

Our original objective in writing this book was to present the foundations and applications of dynamics as we do in the classroom. We used many sequences of figures, emulating the gradual development of a figure by a teacher explaining a concept. We stressed the importance of visual analysis in gaining understanding, especially through the use of free-body diagrams. Because inspiration is so conducive to learning, we based many of our examples and problems on a variety of modern engineering applications. With encouragement and help from many students and fellow teachers who have used the book, we continue and expand upon these themes in this edition.

Examples that Teach

The Strategy/Solution/Discussion framework employed in most of our examples is designed to emphasize the critical importance of good problem-solving skills. Our objective is to teach students how to approach problems and critically judge the results.

Engineering Design We include simple design considerations in many examples and problems without compromising emphasis on fundamental mechanics. Design problems are marked with a D icon, Optional examples titled "Application to Engineering" provide more detailed discussions of the uses of dynamics in engineering design.

Computational Mechanics

Some instructors prefer to teach dynamics without requiring the use of a computer. Others use dynamics as an opportunity to introduce students to the use of computers in engineering, having them either write their own programs in a lower level language or use higher level problem-solving software. Our book is suitable for each of these approaches. We provide optional, self-contained "Computational Mechanics" sections with examples and problems designed for solution by a programmable calculator or computer. In addition, tutorials on using Mathcad® and MATLAB® in engineering mechanics are available from our text's website. See Supplements (page xxi) for a further description.
