When 20 year-old Baby returns from Delhi to West Bengal to care for her ailing mother, the people in her village shun her. Her accent is cosmopolitan, her clothes are too revealing, and "she behaves like she has money now," whisper her fellow Santhals, members of one of India's most insular and historically persecuted tribes. But when Baby falls in love with Khaleque, an outsider and a Muslim, rural gossip explodes into shocking violence, and Baby faces a moment beyond anyone's worst fears. Brutally gang-raped by 13 villagers as punishment for loving the wrong man, Baby has nowhere to turn. Her neighbors deny that the crime happened, and Santhal activists, hardened from centuries of repression, rush to her attackers' defense. With her story suddenly on front pages across India, Baby's search for justice comes into terrible conflict with the fate of her people, sparking a tense fight over the tribal right to self-govern in the world's largest democracy.
With 13 Men, journalist Sonia Faleiro, author of the bestseller Beautiful Thing: Inside The Secret World of Bombay's Dance Bars, has written a 21st-century, international heir to In Cold Blood—at once a shocking reconstruction of how an isolated village took brutal revenge on one of its own, and a hard look at the scourge of rape in India. Despite a string of high-profile crimes igniting a national conversation in India about violence against women, reports of rape enrage the public and are then forgotten. Just as Baby's case slipped out of the news, Faleiro traveled to West Bengal, where she conducted dozens of interviews with villagers, politicians, lawyers, activists, and the victim herself. Elegantly written and fearlessly reported, 13 Men investigates one of India's most shocking crimes, taking readers deep into one besieged tribal community in a heart-wrenching, moment-by-moment account of the crime and its aftermath.
EARLY PRAISE FOR 13 MEN
“Sonia Faleiro is becoming a genre in doing what so few are able to or want to, in peeling back layers of the truth in a republic where there are few reliable metrics for measuring it.”
—Adrian Levy, co-author, The Siege: Three Days of Terror Inside the Taj
“If you’re marginalized, poor, and a victim, your individuality tends to get lost. The great merit of this powerful essay is that it never does that: despite her ordeal and through it, Baby remains someone."
—Abhijit Banerjee, co-founder, The Abdul Jameel Poverty Action Lab
"13 Men is a remarkable feat of close reporting recounted through a single narrative that is, in equal measures, lyrical and enthralling."
—Eliza Griswold, author, The Tenth Parallel
PRAISE FOR SONIA FALEIRO’S BEAUTIFUL THING
"[An] intimate and valuable book of literary reportage that will break your heart."

An unflinching look at a deeply dark subject
By Ken Korczak
The news cycle today is brutal: Shocking reports of monstrous beheadings, people burned alive in cages, entire African villages murdered by militarized thugs.
Well, prepare to have a tad more of your hope for humanity wrung out (if you have any left). This compelling Kindle Single, 13 Men, written by Sonia Faleiro, is a riveting, unflinching piece of long-form journalism looking at the dark and hope-sapping phenomena of gang rape in India.
Faleiro takes apart the complex case of a charming, hardworking, but perhaps headstrong young woman recently returned to live in her remote village in West Bengal, India. She dared to flout centuries old local tribal customs - but paid for it with an even greater corruption of those same traditional moral codes.
The topic is timely, to be sure, noting the recent controversial decision by the government of India to ban a BBC documentary about the gang rape of a New Delhi woman. Debate about this censorship is raging across the Internet and world media.
Gang rapes by roving packs of men has long been a huge problem in India, but the country seems determined to bring this deeply taboo subject out of the darkness into the light of greater public consciousness - a painful process as India's multifaceted, complex and ancient culture lurches into modern times.
Faleiro's 13 Men should serve as a significant contribution to the discussion. With the withering gaze of a journalist determined to get all the facts and capture the complexity of a single case, the author demonstrates how enormously difficult and vexing finding truth and justice can be.
What's involved is not just a clash of cultures, but economic injustice, greedy capitalists, corrupt and/or inept public officials, competing interpretations of laws and customs, illiteracy, alcohol abuse and just the plain-old lack of moral character by certain drifting, good-for-nothing men - and perhaps the women who enable them.
Navigating all this territory and churning it back out into a piece of writing that is clear and concise is no easy task, and I give Fareiro enormous credit for bringing clarity to an almost impossibly muddy issue.
If you have the stomach to confront more of the tragedy, cruelty and heartache of our troubled world, pick up a copy of 13 Men - it's a marvelous piece of journalism on a timely subject that brings much-needed light to a deeply dark issue.

13 Men is a richly researched, poignant, riveting narrative of a brutal gang rape in Subalpur, eastern India. Recounted in the award-winning journalist's characteristically thought-provoking, eloquent style, this one has best-seller stamped all over it.
Unputdownable and highly recommended!

Well worth your time!
By Hengist Pod
Faleiro brings an award-winning journalist's sharp eye for detail to this crisply crafted, evocative account of an alleged gang rape that occurs in a remote hamlet in tribal India.
13 Men is a deeply researched, sensitively rendered narrative of a true-life crime that is anything but straightforward, by far more grey than black and white.
Terrifically engaging and solidly disquieting all at once, this tightly-packed little gem is an important, urgent read that will stay with you long after the last page is turned.
