About the Author
Joseph Rudyard Kipling (30 December 1865 – 18 January 1936) was an English short-story writer, poet, and novelist chiefly remembered for his tales and poems of British soldiers in India and his tales for children. He was born in Bombay, in the Bombay Presidency of British India, and was taken by his family to England when he was five years old. Kipling is best known for his works of fiction, including The Jungle Book (a collection of stories which includes "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi"), Just So Stories (1902), Kim (1901) (a tale of adventure), many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888).

The Bridge that Failed

This is Kipling's long short story, beginning with a poem, showing how the gods of India destroy a bridge completed according to the best English bridge-building knowledge. It shows the builder of the bridge, his distress at the bridge's failure, and his surprise that he is still alive after the bridge is taken out by a flash flood.

Kipling was like Mulder in X-Files: "I want to believe." But his early childhood was filled with Indian mythology, and when he was taken to England and brutally abandoned in the care of a sadistic woman, he learned Christianity as a religion of fear and pain. He saw his sister lose her mind as a result of her mediumistic activity, and he had dreams that convinced him of the reality of reincarnation. So what he wanted to believe was something that even he didn't know.

It's probably safe to assume, however, that he didn't really believe that the collapse of the bridge was brought about by a conspiracy of several Indian gods and goddesses. But we don't know, and will never know, what he did believe.

Another ball game

John Barratt has long been considered one of the preeminent writers within English Civil War Studies, his book “Cavaliers: The Royalist Army at War 1642-6” is required reading. His ability to provide solid historical analysis, while providing a solid narrative, without getting bogged down by academic jargon, provides a well measured, easily readable but well informed title, something that put me in good stead when picking this book, despite the slight worry I was picking up another city history based around council minutes, with brief mentions of defences and events within the cities history. Put your mind at rest, Barratt has produced a publication further from the truth. Oxford is ideally spaced as subject matter to easily look at themes during the English Civil War on a domestic as well as national level, as it served as Royalist Capital. Thus Barratt breaks down the differing themes surrounding a garrison city and the first half of the book is broken down thematically, looking at the differing allegiances held between university, military and townspeople, a factor forcing a precarious allegiance during the early months of the war, the level of strategy and survival of defences, nature of troops and administration to even differing levels of sanitation and health care available in the often less than satisfactory conditions forced upon Oxford. It then briefly analyses the nature and role of the varying factional and governor figures associated with Oxford administration, the ousting of Rupert from Royal favour, the garrulous Sir Arthur Aston to the highly skilled and loved Sir Henry Gage. The Second half of the book moves on addressing the varying campaign narratives surrounding the capital, using Oxford as a springboard to briefly link into its strategic, administrative and logistical role in allowing the Royalist cause to survive so long. Barratt’s addressing of campaign’s and battles not often covered, such as varying sieges of Oxford, Bletchingdon and Cromwell’s limiting raid of 1645, is a breath of fresh air, often little covered and canvasing new ground. It finishes very much at looking at the factional division of the Royalist command at the close of the First English Civil War, a factor that hampered any later reprisal from effective success.

My one reservation within the book is no linking of the history back to present Oxford, identifying where original defences and buildings do survive, or indeed identifying factional division in post-Civil War Oxford. Providing a clear narrative that does what it says is good, but not looking at the wider implications are I feel just slightly falling short of the mark. However a much needed, well crafted publication. Coupled with superb design and format by Helion, coupled with the beautiful pen and Ink showing the king receiving the salute from Sir John Owen’s regiment from the ever talented Peter Dennis, Century of the Soldier publications remains a series worth keeping an eye on for top notch military history.

Excellent addition to your professional library!!

Mosaic of Thought redefines teaching reading comprehension in a workshop approach. Teaching comprehension as a strategic process enables readers to make connections and move beyond literal recall. The simplistic nature of the teaching process and the realistic ideas from classroom teachers makes Mosaic a wonderful tool for any teacher. I could not put this book down, nor could I stop myself from recommending it to everyone I know! We started a book club at my school to immerse ourselves in Mosaic and apply the strategies in our teaching. It has been a very exciting process!

The Missing Link to Teaching Reading Comprehension

This book is the missing link that teachers have been looking for! This book fills that gap that has existed between teachers knowing what skills a student needs to comprehend the text and how we as teachers can teach those skills. In the past teaching reading comprehension seemed a mystery. Teachers would include all of the correct ingredients and hope that something would click in the students' minds and like magic they would comprehend. Well, this book finally tells us what that magic is. It is metacognition. And when you read this book, you will realize immediately its importance. It was like being hit by a bolt of lightning--that had me asking, "Of course! Why hasn't anyone thought of this before?" A bolt that has me glued to the pages. A bolt that has me running to school filled with enthusiasm and new ideas to try in the classroom. And these new techniques really work! A bolt that has me so excited that I can't stop talking about this book. A bolt that has me walking into the classroom with a new sense of confidence about my ability to teach reading. I am using the book and teaching meatacognition to elementary students. The rubrics at the back of the book are wonderful, too. Enjoy!

If you teach, work with, or have children, own this book!

The style of this book is different than any I have read before. However, it has put into writing the ideas I have come to believe about the high-level processes involved in truly reading and learning to read. I have personally bought copies of this book for the six new teachers at my school and as a team, we are discussing and synthesizing all of the information shared in Mosaic. I CAN NOT explain the depth of the joy of teaching, feelings of empowerment as an advocate for student thinking, and enthusiasm for learning these young teachers are demonstrating since we began! Other teachers are so very curious; even our kindergarten students are responding with high level connections and thinking! As a parent of teenagers, I wish I had known the ideas shared in this book to have been able to develop the depth of thinking in my own children's reading as they have grown up. Teachers, student teachers, administrators, and parents--You should OWN this book and read it! You will not forget or regret it.

About the Author

Paulo Teixeira da Cruz, BS in Civil Engineering from Mackenzie University School of Engineering (1957); holds both a Masters from MIT and a PhD degree in Geotechnical engineering from University of S�o Paulo – where he has worked for over 40 years. His first work with dams was in the historical Tr�s Marias Dam and in the past 50 years of his professional life he has worked on countless dams all over Brazil. Mr. Cruz was in the board of consultants for the Campos Novos Dam and since the 80’s he has been rendering his expertise as an independent consultant. He is the author of 100 Brazilian Dams – history cases, material, construction, and design (1996) in which the ever so evident Brazilian know-how in dams’ design and construction is consolidated. Nowadays, Mr. Cruz is the actual Vice-President of the CFRD International Society.

Bayardo Mater�n, Civil Engineer graduate from Cauca University, Popay�n, Colombia (1960), he holds a MSc degree in Civil Engineering from Purdue University, Indiana, USA (1965). He works as a consulting engineer in the field of rockfill dams and hydro power construction methods. Since the completion of Alto Anchicay� CFRD in 1974, he has been involved with many leading engineering organizations on design and construction of rockfill dams and hydro projects. Member of several boards of consultants for different projects under construction, Mr. Mater�n is the actual President of the CFRD International Society. He has participated in the design and construction of the world’s highest CFRDs such as Alto Anchicay�, Salvajina, Porce III, Rancher�a (Colombia); Foz do Areia, Xing�, Segredo, It�, Itapebi, Machadinho, Campos Novos, Barra Grande (Brazil); Aguamilpa, El Caj�n, La Yesca, La Parota (Mexico); Antamina, Torata, Olmos (Peru); Caracoles, Punta Negra (Argentina); Messochora (Greece); Kannaviou (Cyprus); Bak�n (Malaysia); Mohale (Lesotho, Africa); Tiangshenqiao 1 (China); Merowe (Sudan); Berg River, Braamhoek (South Africa); Santa Juana, Puclaro, Punilla, Ancoa, Car�n (Chile); K�rahnj�kar (Iceland); and Siah Bishe (Iran).

Manoel de Souza Freitas Jr., BS in Civil Engineering (1969), from S�o Carlos School of Engineering, University of S�o Paulo, Brazil. Since 1970 has participated in several dams project designs and construction activities in water supply and hydroelectric power generation as a geotechnical engineer. Nowadays, he is an independent consultant for several construction companies and a consultant for the World Bank and Inter American Bank in hydro projects in Brazil. Mr. Freitas has participated in the Tianshengqiao 1 Project (1,200 MW, P. R. China) as a Chief Engineer and Manager, and has been working as an independent consultant for several large CFRDs such as Barra Grande, Campos Novos, and Mazar (Republic of Ecuador).

Review of a CFRD book

The book covers all the necessary design and construction details of the concrete face rockfill dam. Other than that, it also contained information for most of the major constructed CFRD in the world. While it will be too lengthy to write in this review, however, I would like to stress that I actually bought the second book within two months time!
