good view from the outside; little insight on the insides

I'm disappointed with "Static Timing Analysis for Nanometer Designs"
by Bhasker and Chadha, a very expensive book that explains the basics
about static timing analysis, illustrated using a specific tool,
PrimeTime from Synopsys, Inc.

There's little to nothing about how timing analysis itself is done;
for that, try "Timing", by Sachin Sapapnekar. The focus in Bhasker
and Chadha is on constraint modeling, illustrated with the modeling
language SDC, Synopsys Design Constraints.

The physical book is well made and with good quality paper and print.
It is easy on the eyes -- there's lots of white space and timing
diagrams and basic examples, and no obvious typos. And lots and lots
of timing output reports, so many than one's eyes tend to glaze over,
but good to have when you need them. But in too many cases, the
figures are on different pages from the prose describing them, leading
to a lot of page flipping, which impedes learning.

The book is expensive -- it lists for $209.00, and the best price I
found was Amazon's at $165.87. For that kind of money, I want more
insight, more detail, more value. Yet I often felt like I was reading
a user's manual for a tool.

There is a conflict in exposition between simplicity (explain the
basic idea) and complexity (deal with the general case). I'm not a
timing expert, but for a "book [that] can be used as a reference for a
graduate course in chip design" (p. xivv), the exposition stayed quite
rudimentary. Most explanations are predicated on a common clock, and
some issues with setup and hold on multi-cycle paths are not
mentioned; e.g., no mention of the need to check that a multi-cycle
path does not violate setup or hold due to an intermediate clock edge;
I guess it does not occur "in most common scenarios" (page 262).

If you wade and wait long enough though (well more than half way, deep
into chapter 8 "Timing Verification" and into chapter 9 "Interface
Analysis"), you'll be rewarded with descriptions of more complicated
clocking schemes, and an indication of how the setup and hold edges
are determined for non-common clocks.

I was also disappointed with the bibliography -- great books dealing
with circuits and analysis were not mentioned, including "CMOS Circuit
Design, Layout, and Simulation, Revised Second Edition" by R. Jacob
Baker, and "Electronic Circuit and System Simulation Methods" by
Pillage (Pileggi), Rohrer, and Visweswariah.

Is the book clear, does it explain the basics well -- yes. Does the
book address how to *do* static timing analysis, clearly describe the
detailed semantics, or deal with synchronizers and complicated clock
domain crossings -- no. Is it worth the time to read and the money to
acquire -- depends on your needs. I expect it will be helpful; but it
still seems over priced.

I like how the explanations are very simple and to the point. this is a very good guide for primetime. My only complaint is that the book could have more examples. The book is very good for people who have already used primetime and is not for beginners.

Fantastic intro into STA

J Bhasker generally writes easy to understand books. This is another fine example.

This book covers a broad range of topics and is very complete and self contained. This is an excellent refresher on STA and can be used alongside any industry standard tool training one might take. Highly recommended. The price of the book is on the expensive side though.

About the Author
Eric Bogatin received his B.S. in physics from MIT in 1976 and his M.S. and Ph.D. in physics from the University of Arizona in Tucson in 1980. For more than thirty years he has been active in the fields of signal integrity and interconnect design. He worked in senior engineering and management roles at AT&T Bell Labs, Raychem Corp., Sun Microsystems, and Interconnect Devices Inc.

Recognizing a need in the industry for quality technical training in signal integrity, he created Bogatin Enterprises, which has grown to be a world-leading provider of signal integrity training services. As a “Signal Integrity Evangelist,” Eric turns complexity into practical design principles, leveraging commercially available analysis techniques and measurement tools.

Over the years, he has created a number of live classes and presented to more than five thousand engineers, worldwide. These include topics on transmission lines, differential pairs, switching noise, ground bounce, the power distribution network, and EMI. Some courses cover the use of TDR and VNA measurement techniques to characterize interconnects.

In addition, Eric is a prolific author with more than three hundred publications, many posted on his web site, www.beTheSignal.com, for free download. He regularly presents at DesignCon, PCB West, Mentor User Group Meetings, and the IPC’s Designer Day annual event.

Excellent analysis of high-end signal integrity behavior

As an experienced hands-on hardware designer who possesses a lot of books that cover signal integrity issues, I find that the uniqueness of this book is that the author is able to explain very complex subjects using very clear concepts and equations. Chapters 12 and 13 were added to the original release of this book to provide key information of GHz designs. Chapter 12 describes in depth the use and interpretation of S-parameters as they apply to GHz PCB designs, and chapter 13 has an excellent treatment of the behavior, the challenges and how to overcome them to achieve a successful high-performance PDN design. I highly recommend this book for high-speed signal integrity design engineers.

Great book!

I was assigned this book for graduate coursework, and it is wonderful. I have a very limited background in signal integrity, so I can say that this book should be perfect for any electrical engineer or engineering student with a couple years of standard EE coursework under their belt. It is one of those very rare engineering textbooks that actually makes you WANT to read it. The chapters more or less build upon one another well, and ideas are presented clearly and explained well. The writing style isn't loaded down with confusing explanations. The language is very straightforward and the examples are very clear. The author chooses to explain most equations intuitively, rather than bog the reader down with intense derivations. This makes the book excellent for self study. It lacks "problem sets" in the traditional textbook sense, but that doesn't take away from the quality of the material. The author also includes numerical examples in the text throughout the chapters, but the equations are so well explained that the examples aren't really necessary. How many engineering books can you say that about?

Eric Bogatin has done a great service to anyone looking to get their feet wet in the signal integrity field by writing this book. Buy it!

Amazing book

Usually I don't write superlative reviews, but I wonder how can an engineer simply not fall in love with this book.

In my opinion, this book is _the_ definitive authority in exposing a critical set of principles, rules of thumb, and numerical approximation formulas in the field of signal integrity. Despite its apparent simplicity, the author clearly spared no efforts in making the subject at hand extremely clear to understand, especially for a hurried reader. Second, the book introduces conciseness and discipline in discussing basic terminology that is often presented in a confusing manner (such as defining various types of impedance, replacing the "thinking" around ground with one based on return paths). Also, the author is careful to point out certain conflicting notations/inconsistencies from various vendors that persist in the industry, for example when dealing with S-parameter notations. This book is simply how all the engineering books need to be written.

That said, be aware that the book has a very practical focus by distilling the subject into various tips, rules and guidelines that can be applied later on. It is certainly not a theoretical treatise, and you'll search in vain classical EM stuff like deriving the telegrapher's equations from Maxwell's or solving them. The author magically walks around the theoretical stuff, by being able to give very simple and intuitive explanations to potentially complex subjects like time analysis of transmission lines. If you really want to understand the theory, you need to complement this book with "deeper" books such as Brian Young's book (Digital Signal Integrity: Modeling and Simulation with Interconnects and Packages) or Stephen Hall's book (Advanced Signal Integrity for High-Speed Digital Designs). But if you are new to the subject, or if you want a book which provides usually quick answers to the SI problems at hand, I would definitely start with this book.

It's hard to find flaws into the book, and can provide only subjects could be expanded in a third edition. If the author is listening, I would also expected more details on stuff like:
- How to test networks/circuits with a VNA
- Various ways to interpret Smith charts and how to do impedance matching
- More discussion on how to conduct BER experiments
- More practical examples in using open-source software packages (circuit simulators such as QUCS, and 2D/3D field solvers etc) not just those that cost a fortune to license.
- More discussion for the very-high frequency domain (10GHz or more)

This is an pedestrian study from the noted and popular religion scholar, in which Armstrong takes a historical approach to myth, tracing its evolution through a series of periods, from the Paleolithic to the postmyth Great Western Transformation. Each period developed myths reflecting its major concerns: images of hunting and the huntress dominated the myths of the Paleolithic, while the myths of Persephone and Demeter, Isis and Osiris developed in the agricultural Neolithic period. By the Axial Age (200 B.C. through A.D. 1500), myths became internalized, so that they no longer needed to be acted out. Reason, says Armstrong, largely supplanted myth in the Post-Axial Period, which she sees as a source of cultural and spiritual impoverishment; she even appears, simplistically, to attribute genocide to the loss of "the sense of sacredness" myth offers. Armstrong goes on to relate that in the 20th century, a number of writers, such as Eliot, Joyce, Mann and Rushdie, recovered the power of myth for contemporary culture. Although the book offers no new perspectives or information on the history of myth, it does provide a functional survey of mythology's history. But a more engaging choice would be Kenneth Davis's Don't Know Much About Mythology (Reviews, Sept. 5). (Nov.)

In this essay, superpopular religion historian Armstrong (Islam: A Short History, 2000) fastens the attributes of myth to the major chronological categories of human history. At each transition from the Paleolithic to scientific eras, she argues that a mythical conception of natural forces has drifted ever further from interpretation in pragmatic and logical terms, such that myth in modern times is a beleaguered species of fiction. To Armstrong this state reflects a profound misunderstanding of what myth is and does. Defining it as an art form that, on the assumption of the existence of an invisible realm of reality, protects one against the despair arising from the limitations of the tactile world (death in particular), Armstrong relates how mythology has historically been reformulated. She traces a theogony, illustrating it with examples from Chinese, Middle Eastern, Egyptian, and Greek cultures, as sky worship phased into anthropomorphic gods and then into ethical systems such as those of Confucius or Jesus. Written with great explanatory clarity, Armstrong's review of mythology is an efficient, fascinating experience. Gilbert Taylor

Karen Armstrong is a terrific writer & I consider her the best religious writer of our time. She never preaches. Not biased. Just tells the facts as written over the ages. I have read most of her books. The best, I think, was "The Great Transformation." However I just finished reading "Fields of Blood-Religion and the History of Violence." This is an excellent read, indispensable for those who seek the meaning behind the global politics we have today. I recommend all of Armstrong's books to anyone interested in history, religion, politics, & the historical, religious figures of note. .

Short in length, Long in perspective

In a swift 149 pages, Karen Armstrong covers a lot of ground. She communicates the importance of myth. She shows how myth has evolved through history, moving through different phases (the Paleolithic; the Neolithic; Early Civilization; the Axial Age; the Post-Axial Period; and, the Great Western Transformation [encompassing the scientific revolution leading to the enlightenment, modernism, and post-modernism]). In each of these periods, we get a strong sense of how mythology shaped the fabric of society, and how social, intellectual, political, and economic factors in turn shaped mythology. One of the strongest sections of the book is the final 15 pages, where Armstrong depicts modern society in tatters due to its inability to formulate a coherent myth. This is an excellent overview of the subject, one that I'll return to.

Just Weighing In

There are really enough reviews. Two comments to justify the four stars:

First the criticisms and comments below (above?): the greatest weakness in her book is that she offers her opinions and speculations as facts. They are not, they are something much higher. They are interpretations, often brilliant and well footnoted. The introduction left me cold and I disagree with some of the conclusions, especially in the last chapter. So what? We are different people. I agree that this should never be the only work you read about mythology. It might make a good introduction, if it is carefully explained that these are interpretations. Her failure to make this clear is a flaw.

Second, much of the speculation is brilliant, well argued, as supported by examples. She explains the role and nature of myth provocatively, in the best sense of the word, from her first chapter on the earliest myths to her last, which ends with a meditation on art, particularly modern fiction as a modern parallel to mythology.

Her writing is especially good and clear. Those who have found her writing too thick or two difficult should go back reading comic books.
