Authors define the goal of this book as follows: "The objective of this handbook is to provide the most comprehensive, up-to-date reference of known solutions to a large variety of vibration problems of beams and frames." This is indeed an ambitious objective. Was it fulfilled? The answer to this question is affirmative.

This is a compilation of most of the known results; its value cannot be overestimated. There are some other collections of eigenvalues and eigenfrequencies, but they are either very old and unavailable to the English reader (Ananiew, 1946, Birger and Panovko, 2968 are written in the Russian language) or are quite brief (Flugge, 1962; Pilkey, 1994) as far as vibrations are concerned.

Closest and also wonderful books appear to be those by R.D. Blevins "Formulas for Natural Frequency and Mode Shape," Van Nostrand Reinhold (1979) and by D.J. Gorman, "Free Vibration Analysis of Beams and Shafts", Wiley (1975). Karnovsky and Lebed's book is awesomely comprehensive.

The engineer will not have to search in numerous journal articles or books for the needed information. This collection will be of great help to the practicing engineers in many fields: mechanical, civil, aerospace, marine or automotive engineering endeavors. The most important is that the authors inform us that "the majority of results, which are presented in the original sources, have been independently verified by the authors."

Numerous formulas, tables and figures are given that will constitute the most comprehensive reference at present.

About the Author
Igor A. Karnovsky, Ph.D., D.Sc., is a specialist in structural analysis, theory of vibration, and optimal control of vibration. He has 30 years of experience in research, teaching, and consulting in this field, and is the author of more than 70 published scientific papers, including several books on theory of vibrations. He also holds a number of vibration-control-related patents.

Olga Lebed, M.A., M.Sc., specializes in engineering mechanics, stress analysis, and structural analysis. The author of 15 published scientific papers, she has 15 years of experience as a researcher, instructor, and consultant. She is a teacher of engineering at the British Columbia Institute of Technology and researcher at Condor Rebar Consultants, Canada.

In this new book by Igor Karnovsky, a number of frequency equations, eigenvalues and forms are collected of free vibrations for beams and frames of diverse shape and structure features. The book is very timely one; the book is the most complete and comprehensive reference of its type; the book sets a standard of excellence unmatched by any similar book in the field.

"Free Vibrations of Beams and Frames : Eigenvalues and Eigenfuctions" provides the most comprehensive, up-to-date references of known solutions to such problems, complied from monographs, handbooks and numerous journal articles. Besides, many references are turned unknown those for a reader because the author shows a number sources printed in recent USSR in Russian.

It is an exclusive case that (a) equations, (b) special functions used in their solutions, (c) calculation procedures, (d) analytical solutions, (e) numerical solutions, (f) a lot of

numerical data, tables and pictures - are collected under the jacked of such an excellent issue.
